Wifey Wednesday: Falling In Love At A Coffee Shop

This week (tomorrow to be exact!) marks the 4 year anniversary of the day I met Kevin “in real life” for the first time so I thought it would be the perfect time to continue the How We Met Trilogy that I began in February 2012.

The first installment ended with us checking out each others’ beguiling eHarmony profiles. Kevin and I dutifully went through all of the formal communication steps on the site (and there were a lot). But neither of us were in a huge rush, and we were just having fun. But we weren’t really into the whole inboxing each other through eHarmony, so Kevin quickly asked me for my email address.

Let me share some precious snippets from the extremely long first email I ever sent Kevin James:

our first eharmony email

I guess we were making birth order jokes already!!

chandler job

I told you Kevin has a Chandler job (he still works for the same company).

Kevin and I sent each other several looong emails every day throughout August 2009. And that’s when we both started to get an extreme case of You’ve Got Mail!! I’ll always remember the day my roommate’s boyfriend realized something was up with me. He didn’t speak very much English at that time, but apparently the look on my face transcended any language barrier. I was sitting on our balcony, typing on my laptop and giggling like a schoolgirl. Kevin is really funny.

Some more hilarious things that happened during that time:

  • Kevin ASKED me for permission to friend request me on Facebook. I just thought it was so hilarious that he asked me to ask me to be a friend.
  • I immediately panicked because I have a lot of pics and life details on my Facebook page. Kevin predictably had very little of interest for me to stalk on his page. SO unfair.
  • I was so embarrassed to tell my Best Roommate Ever about Kevin and the whole eHarmony thing that I told her in a NOTE. During… get this…. church!!!!!! I was dying to spill, but online dating wasn’t really a thing with people I knew back in 2009 so I was nervous! A rooftop tan/chat session followed. Actually about 100 of those. I miss them!!
  • I also remember sitting in front of my laptop on gchat with Kristy trying to work up the courage to tell her about Kevin. She kept saying, just tell me!!!!!  :)
  • Kevin and I talked on the PHONE for the first time. I cannot emphasize to you enough how nervous I was for that little chat. How do you just chat with someone you’ve never met? That you totally have a crush on? Weird. Kevin was amazing though and totally carried the whole conversation. I wondered if he’d call again.
  • He called every. single. day. after that.

And then this came up…. of course, I was still discussing my every move with Deidre!!! That’s what true friends are for!!

Ahh.. as fate would have it, I was returning to the USA that year for a wedding (great timing Carl & Amy) in September. Normally I would have stayed in the Dominican Republic from August-December without returning to the States because tickets get expensive on a teacher’s salary. But this year, I had a chance to meet KEVIN while I was home.  When he found out I was going to be in the area, he didn’t waste any time asking if we could meet up. And I couldn’t say no!! But I was soooo nervous!

I was afraid I wouldn’t recognize him! What would we talk about? We planned to meet at Caribou Coffee in Rochester, MN, the day after my friend’s wedding. Right before I went to meet him, I remember sitting with some friends at a rugby match, and I was so jittery and impatient!!

I was texting him all the way to the coffee shop (whose phone did I have??). Kevin, ever considerate and the gentleman, was careful to make it there very early. And he loves to tell me about how he carefully picked a table where I would see him the minute I opened the door.

I opened the door, and there he was…

Okay so that picture is from last week in Lakewood, but you get the idea.

I walked in by myself the first time (so brave), but I had two friends in the car who were dying to say hi so I dragged him back outside for a minute!! :) Poor Kevin.

But then we both ordered mochas and started talking. And falling in love.

Kevin was sweet and brought me caramel apples because I was living in the DR where fall really isn’t a thing, and I mentioned once that I missed them. I brought him some little Dominican cheese & crackers (similar to Ritz Bitz). I guess we knew right away that we could win each others’ hearts with food!!

We talked for a few hours and then walked next door to Noodles & Company for some dinner. Still keeping it safe and not getting into a car with some guy from the internet!! I had the mac ‘n’ cheese.

To be continued someday… Some other unexpected and dramatic things happened that weekend!! I’ll get Kevin to give some more input on his side too. He was golfing with his dad right before he met me. ;)

Where did you meet your significant other? Do you ever revisit the exact place? Eharmony & Caribou!!!! We’ve gone to the exact caribou in Rochester a few times, but I think of it anytime I go to any Caribou.

Any other online daters/marriages? It’s super common now. Nobody’s surprised. But it was a little progressive for Wabasha & Winona, Minnesota in 2009. I’m a huge believer. If you’re thinking about doing it, go for it!!!
